When you search on Google there are two types of results that are returned:
- Generic search
- Sponsored results / Paid search (also called pay per click advertising )

Sponsored results work on an auction basis; the person that bids the highest gets the top spot. This method is effective as you can control exactly when and where your website is shown, the downside is that it costs money but at least you can set your budget.
